Relationship Problems: Couples and Family Therapy
Relationships in crisis can respond well to treatment. Couples and families come to therapy for a host of reasons, including relational breakdown, poor communication, estrangement, discord and arguments that seem repetitive or never-ending, post-infidelity experiences, or to manage polyamory more successfully. Are you finding yourself angry or upset in your relationship, even blaming each other for everything that happens? Perhaps, you’re struggling to resolve arguments or keep getting caught up in arguments that lead to the same outcomes. Maybe you find yourself unable to communicate your needs to your partner or family, leaving you frustrated or sad and unheard. So many reasons bring people to couples and family therapy.
Psychologists and psychotherapists in this practice work from systemic point of view, looking to reintegrate a family or couple back into a more functional and healthy system. A focus on communication and resolving arguments and disputes is primary in this work. We also recognise that some relationships cannot be re-integrated and can work with couples to dissolve their relationship in an amicable way, especially when children are involved. Psychologists and psychotherapists draw from a variety of ways of working, including imago therapy (IT), mentalization-based treatment (MBT), systemic and narrative therapy (SNT).
